RHYTHM IS A DANCER : WE SHINE 24

Portsmouth Creates  – We Shine 2024 Invited me to create an interactive instalation, combining music, light and movement. Responding to these ideas I created Rhythm Is A Dancer.

Rhythm Is A Dancer is an interactive audio-visual installation, inviting the public to drum out their own beats on customised oversize drums. These aren’t just any old drums, though, and these aren’t just any drumbeats… Surrounding the drums is a screen, displaying an ever-changing visual projection which responds to the drums and the drummers. Each drumbeat directs the projection, in a continuous flow of light and movement, playfully bringing to life the symbiotic relationship between sound, light and movement, and encouraging the audience to take control. The light reacting to the drums, and the drummers reacting to the lights, creates a positive feedback loop, a conversation between the players, music, movement and light. 

The drums are artworks in themselves, hand painted by artist Alice Kristina Rose and lit from within, becoming glowing circles of light, a beacon to the dancefloor. Using ultra violet reactive paints and UV lights, the drums glow, further tying them to the vibrant projections
