SMOKING APPLES AND LITTLE CAULIFLOWER: CELL

After being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, Ted goes on a trip of a lifetime… and so does his pet fish.
CELL uses puppetry, physical theatre and an original score to explore a man’s loss of movement through this degenerative disease.
Emily Appleton created a wonderful score for this heartfelt original puppetry piece.  She wanted to make what she had more than programmed instruments so we decided to record a string quartette, A pianist and an accordion player! The score was 60 minutes long so it was a wonderful long session into the early hours but worth the work.  A very emotive score called for music sensitivity by the players which I was determined to translate to the recording.  I used a large microphone array to capture different qualities in the performance.
